When it comes to marketing your real estate business, a well-designed website is one of the most powerful tools you can have. Not only is it a centralized hub for your marketing efforts, but it’s also a key way to attract new clients and build your brand. However, with so many platforms and features to choose from, how do you know which website is right for your business? In this blog, I’ll guide you through the essential steps to picking a real estate website platform that works for you.
Why Your Website Matters
Let’s face it—many agents have mixed feelings about websites. Maybe you’ve had one in the past but didn’t see results, or you’re skeptical about whether a website is worth the effort. The truth is, when done right, a website can generate leads, showcase your brand, and elevate your entire marketing strategy. It’s not just about having a presence online; it’s about having a site that actively works for your goals.
Step 1: Start with Your Goals
Before diving into the endless options for website platforms, take a step back and ask yourself, What do I want this website to achieve?
Do you want to:
Attract sellers in your market?
Showcase your expertise to grow your brand?
Host content like videos or blog posts?
Generate leads with forms or landing pages?
Your answers to these questions will shape every decision you make moving forward. A website isn’t just about looking good—it’s about aligning with your overall business strategy.
Step 2: Evaluate What You Already Have
Many brokerages and teams offer website options to their agents. If that’s the case for you, take the time to explore what’s available. Does the platform meet your needs, or is it worth looking at alternatives? Starting with what’s already accessible can save you time and resources.
Step 3: Focus on Features
Here’s where the fun begins! Look at the features different platforms offer and prioritize what you actually need:
IDX Integration: Do you want MLS listings to pull directly onto your site?
Customization: Can you personalize the design to reflect your brand?
Lead Capture: Does it support landing pages or forms for generating leads?
Content Hosting: If you create video or blog content, is there space to feature it?
Not every website needs every feature. Focus on what aligns with your goals and skip the bells and whistles you won’t use.
Step 4: Consider Ease of Use
A feature-packed website is useless if you can’t figure out how to use it. Think about your comfort level with tech. Do you want something simple and intuitive, or are you okay with a platform that requires more learning?
If you’re not tech-savvy, a user-friendly site will save you time and frustration. The easier it is to update your website, the more likely you’ll be to use it consistently.
Step 5: Prioritize Customization
Your website should reflect you. It’s the one thing that sets you apart from every other agent in your market. Look for platforms that allow you to:
Add your own branding, colors, and logos.
Include unique content like videos or neighborhood guides.
Tailor the user experience to your ideal client’s needs.
Step 6: Think About Lead Generation
A great website isn’t just a digital business card—it’s a lead generation machine. Evaluate the tools your platform offers for capturing leads.
Can you create custom landing pages?
Does it support innovative lead magnets like quizzes or guides?
How does it encourage potential clients to engage with you?
The more robust the lead gen features, the more opportunities you’ll have to grow your business.
Step 7: Look at Integrations
If you’re already using tools like a CRM or email marketing software, make sure your website can integrate seamlessly. This will save you from manually transferring data and streamline your overall workflow.
Step 8: Plan for the Long Term
Your website should be part of a larger strategy, not just a short-term solution. Think about:
Whether the platform allows you to grow as your business evolves.
If you’ll still have access to the site if you switch brokerages or teams.
How the site can support your brand over the next several years.
A great website grows with you, helping you build a sustainable online presence.
